One Imagination was highlighted recently in a Los Angeles Times column written by Hector Tobar. Check it out! Thousands march to demand US immigration reform
By Paula Bustamante LOS ANGELES — Thousands of immigrants poured into the streets of Los Angeles on Sunday to demand that President Barack Obama fulfill his campaign promise to legalize millions of undocumented immigrants. "Legalization or no re-election!" chanted the demonstrators participating in protest on May Day protest, a holiday mostly ignored in the United States. Most were immigrants from Central America and Mexico demanding the immigration reform Obama has promised for some of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States to gain legal status. Organizers said 10,000 immigrants protested downtown, while the Los Angeles Police Department put the crowd's numbers at 3,500. Though leaders of the pro-immigration reform movement advocate for immigrant rights, they have largely stopped short of asking the Hispanic community to vote against the president and his fellow Democrats in the 2012 elections after Hispanics played a significant role in bringing Obama to the White House. "We all known that it is the Republicans who are blocking immigration reform and that a Republican administration would simply stall all our requests, so we cannot threaten right now that we will vote against Obama," said Javier Rodriguez of the March 25 Coalition. But Alfredo Gutierrez, a former Democratic state senator from Arizona, said Obama could not be counted on to enact the promised reforms. "We should deny our votes to Obama, a man who clearly is not sincere about his intentions," he told AFP. "We will not get anything from Obama. We just need his to stop the systematic deportation of children, students and parents, because it is destroying our community." Maricarmen, an undocumented Mexican-born woman who has lived in the United States for 10 years, blamed "American double standards." "We work hard. They say we don't have papers but we are employed and we pay taxes, just like any other citizen here." She said she wanted to get legalized so she could travel to Mexico to visit her family. "I live here to work and because I need to do so, I'm not robbing anybody," added the woman who only gave her first name, adding that she was working as a cashier at a supermarket. In the fiscal year that ended September 30 alone, the United States deported a over 392,000 unauthorized immigrants, a record. Thousands more protesters marched in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in support of immigrant and worker rights, according to estimates provided by local media. Milwaukee saw its congenial political culture change after Governor Scott Walker introduced a proposal in February to strip unions of collective bargaining power. The bill sparked huge protests and led 14 Democratic state senators to flee to neighboring Illinois in a futile attempt to stop its passage. Opponents of the changes say the measures seek to kill public sector unions, which tend to back Democrats. "This is an aggressive attack on the basic democratic process and a consolidation of corporate power," said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, executive director of the Milwaukee-based Voces de la Frontera, a group tasked with rallying labor membership among the region's growing Hispanic population. http://www.thestrategycenter.org/blog/2010/07/12/comment-now-ensure-wilshire-bus-only-lanes-get-approved Comment now to ensure Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes get approved! By April Wong Publication Date: Monday, July 12, 2010 We're so close to making Bus Only Lanes a reality! The draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes Project has been released for public review! Over the next month until July 26th, MTA will be taking in public comments online and via mail to be included in the official Environmental Impact Report. If all goes as planned we can have the Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes up and running in early 2012! Your comments are critical, due by July 26th Your comments will be critical during this time because full public participation makes the Environmental Impact Report that much stronger. As soon as the Environmental Impact Report is completed, the Los Angeles City Council and the MTA can move to approve the project for construction. Imagine what we else we can unlock with this precedent for reducing auto/oil consumption in the auto capital of the world! How to submit your comment Submit your comment supporting the results of the draft Environmental Impact Report to [email protected] or visit the website for an online comment submission form at http://www.metro.net/projects/wilshire/ Key points for your comment 1. I support the findings of the draft EIR. 2. I urge MTA and LA City Council to adopt the "Alternative A" proposal with one minor amendment. Amend the proposal to include Valencia to Parkview St. segments in the project where the Westlake/Alvarado community resides. 3. I support the expedient implementation of the Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes Project. Organizing behind the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) The last two weeks members of the Bus Riders Union, environmental allies such as Green LA and Natural Resources Defense Council, community residents from the Wilshire Corridor, Koreatown, and Pico Union as well as the Westside have come out to testify at 4 public hearings on why they support the results of the environmental impact report and the overall bus-only lanes project. The successful implementation of the Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes project is not only an environmental breakthrough but holds the key to implementing a countywide bus-only lanes network and bus-only lanes throughout the rest of the country. Our right to clean air, responsibility to reduce greenhouse gases and the impacts of global warming, and reclaiming our streets from cars for our mobility and community needs all takes a movement fighting on the ground to win. Dear Friend: As you know, we are strong supporters of cleaning our water and bringing waves back to Long Beach by reconfiguring the Breakwater. Wave activity will improve our water quality, stimulate tourism, and boost our local economy by making our beaches a new and exciting destination. We can do all this while protecting our coastal homes and the Port of Long Beach. We expect that this Friday, June 18, 2010 the Army Corps of Engineers will release their decision on moving forward with a federal feasibility study on the breakwater's reconfiguration. If the decision is released as expected, then on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 the City Council will vote on whether to move forward and partner with the Army Corps on an extensive feasibility study. This will be a historic vote, and decide the future of our local beaches. We encourage you to attend the June 22nd City Council meeting and voice your support for a federal feasibility study. The meeting starts at 5:00pm. Feel free to call our offices (562) 570-6919 (Councilmember Robert Garcia) or (562) 570-6918 (Councilmember Patrick O'Donnell) if you have any questions. Also, please help spread the word - feel free to forward this email, Tweet it, or post it on your Facebook wall. Thank you! Housing Rights March Thursday, June 17th 5:30 PM Meet at the corner of Sunset and Echo Park Blvd. Bring signs and noisemakers!! Given our temporary setback on the rent freeze – it is more important than ever for us to be strong and visible in pushing forward full rent control reform and our other demands! This march will be in Council District 13 because of Councilmember Garcetti’s decision to vote against tenants, with actions in other council districts in the future. Please share with colleagues, members, friends and neighbors – see you all there! Becky Dennison [email protected] WE ARE ALL OSCAR GRANT! JUSTICE FOR OSCAR GRANT Murdered by BART Officer Johannes Mehserle MASS PROTEST ON 1st DAY OF TRIAL! Monday, June 14th 7AM Sharp Los Angeles Superior Court 210 W. Temple Street, Los Angeles, CA Oscar Grant's young life was ripped away from his daughter and family on New Year's Day, 2009. He was shot execution style with his face to the ground by Oakland BART officer Johannes Mehserle. Oscar's murder was filmed and posted on youtube.com which ignited firestorms of protest in Oakland. Mehserle's trial was moved to LA, escaping Oakland's outraged community. LA judge Perry, who covered up the Rampart/CRASH scandal, is assigned the case. Mehserle is the 1st cop in California to be tried for on-duty murder. We cannot allow another killer cop to be released back into the community. Mehserle must be convicted for the cold blooded murder of Oscar Grant.
